Neurodiversity Advocacy

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5149801607

Many people view Autistic Spectrum Disorders as an epidemic in dire need of treatment, evidenced by the presence of such organisations as "Cure Autism Now". As Neurodiversity advocates, we feel that this is not the case; we accept that no two people have the same neurological configuration and believe that Autistic Spectrum Disorders are simply valid neurological variations and assert the rights of Autistic People.

In fact, we advocate not only for people on the autistic spectrum, but anyone with a neurodivergence that presents a social challenge, e.g. all Autistic Spectrum Labels, Fragile X Syndrome, Cognitive Impairments (arithmetic, reading, writing, spelling, et cetera.), Angelman Syndrome, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, A.D.D./A.D.H.D, Tourette Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Schizophrenia.

Autistic and other Neurodivergent People ....

....have the right to be autistic. No Autistic Person should be compelled to be or to act neurotypically as he/she is not neurotypical.

....have a right to equal employment opportunities.

....have the right to be educated in a way that fits their neurological configuration and the right to be accommodated both in school and on the job so that they can perform optimally.
(Examples of accommodations: Extended time for work-related projects, training, and/or testing, use of cassettes, sensory adaptations, use of a computer, and Social Stories)

....have a right to advocate for themselves without fear of harassment or embarrassment.

...are human, have the right to assert their humanity, and are entitled to the same natural rights to which all people are entitled.

....have the right to express their emotions in "Autistic ways", e.g. Self-stimulatory behaviour (stimming), repetitive behaviour (lining things up, et cetera).
