Nothing About Us, Without Us!

NESAN – The Neurodiversity Self-Advocacy Network

A Project of Neurodiversity International (NDI)

What is a DPO?

A disabled people’s organisation (DPO) is an organisation that has a membership and managing board with a majority of disabled people, and whose objectives are the rights and equality of disabled people.

Whose is really in Control? ('Nothing About Us, Without Us')

DPO's Co-operative Alliance (which includes NeuroDiversity International) is doing the first online poll to ask Disabled People and allies of what percentage at management (board) and governance levels should Disabled People have control of management and decision making process within DPO's... This poll will hopefully give us all an idea of what DPO's management and decision making structures should look like, under 'Nothing About Us, Without Us'.

Thriving or Surviving

Disability LIB,  Research report detailing the challenges and opportunities facing disabled people’s organisations. It shows DPOs are excluded from most mainstream voluntary sector capacity-building initiatives, due to barriers and a lack of understanding of the user-controlled disability sector. Media and Hate Crime: history of attitudes to disabled people

Moving image media continually draw on attitudes and representations of disabled people from the past, which have been fossilised in myths, literature, theatre, folklore, biography and history. Having a clear understanding of where thinking about disability has come from is important in order to see that underlying negative attitudes and stereotypes have been reinforced by society and religion over many centuries.
